Preparing my Kitesurfing Trip to Sri Lanka. What are the Best Kite Spots in Sri Lanka?

Hi guys, in this post we are going to recommend what it are the most important things to keep in mind when preparing your kitesurfing trip to Sri Lanka. Many of you have already made kite trips to many places in the world and probably already take into account many of the things we discussed in this post, however we remind you of the most important thing so that you do not forget anything along the way:

How can I bring my kite baggage to Sri Lanka?

When buying a flight to make a kite trip to Sri Lanka it is very important that you take into account how you are going to transport your kiteboard material to Sri Lanka. There are many airlines that do not charge baggage fees for carrying surf and kitesurfing equipment. The main Arab companies  have a very flexible policy. I always fly with Qtar airways and I can carry the number of suitcases I want as long as it does not exceed 30 Kg. Also, I have never had any problems with carrying the boardbag, they simply pass it through a separate tape as special material

What is the measure of the kites to take?

The measurement of our kites to carry to Sri Lanka will always depend on the season in which we will travel

In Sri Lanka we have 2 seasons of kite. In summer the wind is stronger and oscillates between 17-25 knots but sometimes even reaches 30 knots. Depending on the weight, we always recommend bringing kites from 7 to 10 meters. In winter, however, the wind is weaker and usually makes an average of 14 to 18 knots, so we usually sail with kites of 12 to 14 meters.

What is the best way to get from the airport to the kite spot?

In Sri Lanka there is public transport and it is quite economical. However, we always recommend hiring a private vehicle for reasons of convenience. A private vehicle is faster than the public bus or the train. In addition, and most importantly, we will have enough space to leave our kitesurf baggage

How is the weather? Should I wear neoprene?

Sri Lanka is in the tropics and it is not cold. Therefore, you do not need to wear neoprene for your kite trip to Sri Lanka. With a swimsuit and lycra is enough for you to enjoy the kite to the fullest in this spot. Do not worry either if you are going to pass or not very hot because when wind is not feeling a sense of embarrassment. What if we always recommend is to bring boots or water boots and sunscreen.

What are the best kite spots in Sri Lanka?

There are many kite spots in Sri Lanka and Kalpitiya is probably the best one. Around Kalpitiya there are a lot of islands with flat and shallow water perfect for freestyle riding , like Vella island, probably the best kite spot in the world
